Harry Potter Moment of the Week #9

This is a meme started by Uncorked Thoughts which aims to share with fellow bloggers a weekly slice of HP awesomeness. It is an awesomeness that only increases with time and number of reads. Once a week we will share a character, spell, chapter, object, quote etc. from the books/films/J. K. Rowling (or anything Potter related)! Each topic will be posted on Uncorked Thoughts HERE. There will also be  free weeks where everyone can share whatever topic they want! Be sure to share your link on the main site for all other HP MOTW fans to enjoy!

This Week’s Theme: Quibbler or Daily Prophet?

Okay, now, this is an interesting decision. Which one do you prefer??

One the one hand, during peace times the Daily Prophet seems to be the more reliable paper, reporting on all the latest news of the British Wizarding World. For year, probably centuries, it reported on daily events, and there was little to nothing wrong with reading it. And it seems like after the Second Wizarding War ended, it went back to its normal routine. So, one would think that would be the preferable paper.

I choose the Quibbler, and here’s why.

“Reporter” (and I use this term very loosely) Rita Skeeter may have said it best during one of her conversations with Hermione:

“So the Daily Prophet exists to tell people what they want to hear, does it?” said Hermione scathingly.
Rita sat up straight again, her eyebrows raised, and drained her glass of Firewhiskey.
“The Prophet exists to sell itself, you silly girl,” she said coldly. (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, pg 214)

The only thing the owners of the Prophet really want is profit. (Ironic, isn’t it?) The title of the paper basically is stating the only thing they care about is keeping revenue going, and don’t really care how they get it, or if what they print is the truth. There is little to no journalistic integrity. They place no value on the lives of the people they claim they are writing for or those they write about. There are so many levels of yuck involved there, it’s hard to know where to begin. And let’s face it, the fact that they would hire someone like Rita Skeeter says a lot about them, doesn’t it?

The Quibbler on the other hand, is privately run, and in spite of its weird and outlandish content, has its own sense of honor and veracity. Yes they may write about the  supposed existence of the Crumple-Horned Snorkack, but that’s only because the writers actually believe it exists and want to make the public aware.

QuibblerI love towards the end of the series when the Death Eaters take over the Ministry and, once again, the Prophet becomes a mouthpiece for evil-doers. I just love how Luna’s dad steps up and becomes one of the few voices of truth (until of course, that unfortunate incident involving Luna getting kidnapped and all).

One of my favorite moments that is Quibbler related happens in Deathly Hallows when Harry, Ron, and Hermione overhear some friends and supporters who are on the run from the Death Eaters. One is Ted Tonks who says,

The Prophet? You deserved to be lied to if you’re still reading that muck, Dirk. You want the facts?, try The Quibbler.

I LOVE that! I love that an outlet that was previously dismissed as ridiculous becomes one of the ultimate sources for truth and freedom. I love the idea that a person who is considered weird is also the one who is the strongest intellectual hold-out against evil. It just makes me so happy. So yeah, they may go back to printing strange stuff after Voldemort is defeated, but I will keep my subscription to the Quibbler going strong!

Well, that’s really all I’ve got for ya! Just a small moment of sweet HP goodness! I hope you enjoyed it, and please, feel free to share your own thoughts on the Quibbler or Daily Prophet in the comments below!

    1. Yeah, I was thinking they probably got an overhaul after all the Wizarding Wars, so if someone I trust is part of them, then they are probably getting their integrity back. I would totally trust Ginny!

  1. You bring up some really good points and quotes! I loved it when Quibbler published Harry’s interview about Voldemort’s return and how Umbridge banned it and everyone at Hogwarts read it and people started believing him and then how it became the source of the truth during the Second War. So, yeah, I think I will keep an eye on it))

  2. I love your reasoning for this :). It was definitely a tough decision this week. It’s hard to pick between two things that write such fiction abotu the wizarding world (on occasion) 🙂

  3. I agree, it would the more fun read, I know that newspapers are there to tell the facts. But I like to enjoy what I am reading, a little but fun amongst the doom and gloom is welcome.

  4. I’d already had a soft spot for The Quibbler just because it was run by Luna’s dad and because of the quirky stuff it published, but when it gave Harry an outlet to tell his story, I thought it was totally awesome. Plus, I just couldn’t look at The Daily Prophet the same way again after what it wrote about Harry.
